Qualifying Event Responsibilities
Below are some guidelines to help in the administration of MCAB. Everyone involved in competitions donate their time to provide a quality event for homebrewers. The organizers of the 14 QE's and the MCAB, spend hundreds of hours organizing and administering these competitions. Based on the turnouts of your competitions, I believe that this effort is appreciated by the homebrewing community. With these guidelines, I am attempting to reduce the amount of time all of us have to spend coordinating these events as they relate to MCAB. The MCAB would not exist without the QE's and the effort of the organizers of these events.
The webmaster has made many improvements to the MCAB site including links to the homepages of the QE's and dates of the competitions. I hope this will be helpful to brewers who want to participate in the MCAB QE's and possibly increase entries in your competitions. I would also like to update the site with the names of qualifying brewers on a quarterly basis (at a minimum). Only the brewer's name and qualifying style will be posted on the site, no contact information will be made public.
Your cooperation and efforts are greatly appreciated by me and all the brewers who participate in MCAB and the QE's. I know all of our hard work will help in making the MCAB a quality competition in which the hobby's best brewers can compete against one another. I also ask for your input so we can make the reporting of results easy and timely for everyone. Please let me know if the rules are not clear. Everyone should understand what is expected so the qualifying brewers are established in a consistent manner.
Thank you for your assistance.
Curt Stock, MCAB Organizer
- Report Qualifying Brewers within 3 weeks of the QE competition date.
- A report format was distributed to all QE's. But QE's can report the results in any format they choose but the information must include:
- Brewer's Name(s)
- MCAB Qualifying Style (2004 BJCP Category 1-19,22)
- Club Affiliation
- Complete Mailing Address
- Phone Number
- Email Address
- Failure of a timely and accurate report may result in qualifying brewers not being contacted in time to participate in the MCAB.
- For MCAB IX and beyond, the 2004 BJCP Categories 1 - 19 and 22 are qualifying styles.
- If the Qualifying Event (QE) has combined any categories, the QE must provide the MCAB organizer with the highest placing (or
scoring) beer from each MCAB Qualifying Style. (Example: Amber and Dark European Lager categories are combined, an Oktoberfest places first, the next highest placing Dark Lager must be reported as the Dark Lager MCAB qualifier for that QE. If no Dark Lager entry has placed in the combined category, the highest scoring Dark Lager would qualify for MCAB)
- If the Qualifying Event (QE) has split any categories, the QE must provide the MCAB organizer with the beer that will represent the MCAB Qualifying Style for the split category. (Example: Stout category is split into Stouts and RIS, the judges must decide which 1st place beer will represent the Stout Category in the MCAB. This designation must be done at the time of judging.) Only one entry for each qualifying style from each QE will be allowed entry into MCAB.
- The MCAB Organizer and committee maintain the option of adding Qualifying Events to the list for future MCABs. If a competition feels they would be a good candidate for a MCAB QE, contact the MCAB Organizer.
- The MCAB Organizer and committee maintain the option of removing a competition from the list of Qualifying Events. QE status will be assessed on the following criteria (but not limited to): competition size (250+ entries preferred), number of combined categories, and timeliness of Qualifying Brewers reports. This criterion is informal and many other factors will be looked at prior to any final decisions. Any removal of a QE from the list will be done on a case by case basis and historical conduct will be taken into consideration. It is not the intent to exclude competitions from being a QE, but rather to maintain the integrity and facilitation of MCAB operations.
