  Most important
piece of equipment
Counter-flow chiller. It has greatly improved the quality of my beers

Keys to success: Quality control.  A healthy starter and rapid chilling minimize the amount of undesirables in the finished beer.
  History
I started brewing in the summer of 2007.  My “crazy” neighbor at the time came back from a trip to Ohio with a homebrewing equipment kit and a Dunkelweizen kit.  With much skepticism, I helped him make the kit, wondering if this stuff was going to produce alcohol, make me blind, or possibly both.  Turns out, after a night of drinking several of the bottles, we were successful in fermenting sugars into alcohol, and it tasted pretty good.  A few weeks later, I got my own kit for my birthday present.

The following year I managed to win a couple of medals in the Fruit Beer and Spice, Herb, Vegetable categories.  I went to my first homebrew competition; my wife and I were stewards there, and after that I knew this homebrewing thing was one of those hobbies that was here to stay.  In the summer of 2009 I took the BJCP exam and that December I was elected president of the Brevard County homebrew club, SAAZ.

Philosophy:
Keep brewing fun.  As an engineer, I tend to over-analyze things, and maybe that is what helped me to do well on the BJCP exam, but when it comes to brewing, it’s a fun hobby.  I encourage my friends to brew at whatever level they are comfortable and enjoy the process and the results.
